Frankston Gaming Machine Losses PDF Print E-mail
FRANKSTON ON TRACK TO MATCH RECORD GAMING MACHINE LOSSES IN 2009/10

Figures obtained from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation have projected that Frankston residents will lose a projected $73.8 million in local venues this financial year.

The figures will mean that Frankston will be on track to match the record high losses from 2008/09.

Inga Peulich, State Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Communities said that the increase is a growing concern across Melbourne’s south-east.

“There was no doubt last year that Kevin Rudd’s economic cash handouts contributed to an increase in gaming expenditure in Frankston yet the downward trend that was expected by the Brumby Government has not eventuated,” Ms Peulich said.

“You know there is something wrong in Victoria when the rhetoric from the State Government has been that they are controlling the Gaming Industry, however Frankston is now projected to rise a staggering $12.8 million in gaming expenditure since 2003.”

“After a decade of neglect in Gaming across Victoria, the rise in gaming expenditure shows a government that is unable to manage the portfolio and the responsibility,” Ms Peulich said.

“The King of Spin, John Brumby must stop putting revenue and the increasing State Government debt ahead of his responsibility to Victorians and those whose lives are wrecked by problem gambling.”

BRUMBY GOVERNMENT ALLOWS AN EXTRA 358 POKER MACHINES IN FRANKSTON

Gaming venues in Frankston will have access to an additional 358 poker machines after the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation released its maximum permissible number of gaming machines policy for each municipal district in Victoria.

Under the changes, the City of Frankston will be entitled to a maximum 954 gaming machines.  Currently it houses 596 machines.

Inga Peulich, State Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region said the State Government has forced the gaming portfolio into crisis with the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

“John Brumby and his Gaming Minister say on the one hand they have control of gaming in Frankston yet on the other will allow new and existing venues to apply for up to 358 extra poker machines,” Ms Peulich said.

“For many years I have claimed in State Parliament and in the media that we will see a potential increase in gaming machines throughout Frankston and for the first time the VCGR have backed up those claims.”

“Dr Harkness should have kept the Frankston community informed of the potential increase in gaming machines as a result of the Brumby Governments’ failed gaming policies over the past ten years,” Ms Peulich said.

“These potential gaming machines throughout Frankston come on the back of ten years of failed gaming policy from the State Labor Government.”

“What makes these numbers even worse is that they are based on 2006/07 population figures that are now three years outdated and one wonders what the increase will be when the population figures are updated,” Ms Peulich said.

“There is also an opportunity that additional smaller venues will open in the municipality as is the case in New South Wales and Queensland after changes to legislation recently which will see the VCGR rather than Frankston Council approve gaming venues.”

“You know there is something very wrong in Victoria when the failed gaming policies over the past ten years will allow an extra 358 gaming machines into Frankston,” Ms Peulich said
